turning tides

Dramatic and bold, soft and pretty, subtle & sophisticated or sleek and chic – curtains are back and they say it all!

The image of the humble curtain has suffered in recent years, overwhelmed by the popular and prevalent trend towards a minimalistic approach to ‘decorating’. This trend was embodied in the plain screen roller blind and dominated by a monochromatic palette, clean clear lines (that teetered on the edge of becoming clinical) and a relative absence of detail.

But the tide has turned and the often soulless, stark simplistic trademarks of minimalism are now being forsaken for the expressive characteristics of the curtain, in response to the need to revitalize, reclaim and above all, personalise the living space.

No matter what the mood, curtains, with their versatility of styles and a treasure trove of fabric colours, patterns and textures, can create a look that reflects the personality of the individual.

Today, Laura Ashley takes the trend one step further. With a holistic approach to lifestyle decorating the Design Service can help create complete living spaces with window treatments, furniture, rugs, cushions, throws, prints, mirrors, bed linen and lighting all designed to work harmoniously to tell one story.

Central to this concept is the selection of the curtain style and fabric... and the options seem endless. It is the unique combination of 5 factors (heading style, decorative detail, fabric colour, pattern and texture) that will create the finished look. Each combination will tell a different story...

For instance:
Select a goblet or triple pleat heading style teamed with a traditional and restrained choice of fabric colour and pattern to create a formal feel. Increase the length of the pleat to add drama to treatments in rooms with long/high windows.

Use a silk substrate to imbue elegance and sophistication. Interline the same curtain with bumph and the style becomes fulsome and luxurious. Add a beaded trim to the leading edges and the look takes on an air of opulence.
Hang the curtain from a hand crafted polished mahogany stained timber rod with antiqued brass rings and filigree finials to enhance the finished look.

Team the curtains with a co-ordinating roman blind and the picture is complete...
The once simple, conventional, pleated curtain is now transformed into a stylish decorative statement that achieves much more than its designated function of covering a window. Instead, the curtain has become a key feature of the living space and plays a critical role in determining the personality of the room.

Let the Laura Ashley Design Service help create the look that’s just right for you with customised curtains that compliment your lifestyle. They’ll assist in selecting heading styles and advise on fabrics and finishes to design curtains that ‘say it all’.
